You know what, every post can’t be positive. I’ve had a rough and stressful week and being a condo owner is just adding to my stress. Somedays I wish I could go back to the easy days of renting. When there was a problem with something, I just contacted the landlord. Much easier than spending hundreds of dollars on every issue that comes up! I don’t really make enough money to cover all of this. I’m a single mom relying on only my income and it is not easy.

I have already done so many repairs and upgrades. I’ve already replaced all the kitchen appliances. The windows need replacing because they are super drafty. The heat just constantly runs and I can feel the money draining from my bank account!! The washer and dryer both have problems and need replacing. I discovered the cord to my garbage disposal is completely rusted, which obviously happened before I moved in here, so now apparently I shouldn’t use it and need a new disposal. UGH! And then sometime in December I noticed a crack at the top of my bathroom ceiling which opened up and became a large gap almost all across the top of one wall. Lovely.

So as I’m already stressed about those things, and more, guess what? My front door just won’t open all of a sudden. Really?! Of all the dumb things to happen! It’s currently been 6 days now that I haven’t been able to open my front door. This kind of put me over the edge because I have enough to deal with! I’ve lived in a lot of different places during my life and I never had a problem opening my door. Thank goodness I have a sliding glass door on my patio because I’ve had to use that to come and go all week. Super annoying.

From the photo the door looks totally normal but yeah, it won’t open. It is nothing to do with the handle or the deadbolt. I asked my realtor about it, and he said that the likely cause is the door jamming into the frame due to expansion/upward heaving of the earth in winter. I didn’t have any door issues in the summer and fall so I suppose that is the cause.

I have a handyman coming to hopefully make some adjustments to the door and get it back to normal so I can actually go out my front door. My advice to anyone thinking of buying a house or condo, don’t do it! Unless you make a lot of money or are in a dual income household, it gets way too expensive fast. Something always needs to be repaired!

Unfortunately what you say is true. Houses and Condos can be money pits. Because it’s always something, that’s the name of the game of home ownership!
We learned the hard way that homeowners have to expect to have repairs and upgrades needed. And for many people, paying the mortgage is hard enough, let alone adding extra repair expenses. There should be some kind of coverage for the first year in a place, that anything that goes wrong in the first year would be covered. I know some sellers offer a “home warranty”. The house we bought most recently had a home warranty. You think you’re “safe” but as WE found out, the home warranty covered very little and was limited.
So I wish there was a really good answer!
